SIOUX FALLS, SD– The Sioux Falls Canaries announced today they have acquired left handed relief pitcher David Hurst and infielder Andrew Stafford from Traverse City of the Frontier League in exchange for infielder Kyle Eveland.
Hurst was a first round draft pick of the Traverse City (MI) Beach Bums in the Frontier League tryout camp in 2008. He appeared in 32 games last season with Traverse City, going 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings pitched. The Gainesville, FL native was signed by the L.A. Angels in 2007 and played college baseball at the University of Florida. While with the Gators in 2007, Hurst led the team with a 3.44 ERA and six saves.
Stafford appeared in 47 games with the Beach Bums after completing his senior season at Oakland (MI) University where he hit .381 with eight home runs and 46 RBI in 55 games. The Sterling Heights, MI native was one of only two players in Oakland University history to finish his career with 200 or more hits. While at Traverse City, Stafford batted .217 with nine RBI.
“We are excited to bring in a solid left handed pitcher that we can bring out of the bullpen,” said Canaries manager Steve Shirley. “That’s something we have been missing since Kris Regas was signed by the Detroit Tigers last season. We are also fortunate to gain another solid middle infielder in the process and happy to give Kyle an opportunity to go somewhere where he can play everyday,” added Shirley.
Eveland was acquired by the Canaries at midseason last year and batted .266 in 25 games. Prior to joining the Canaries, Eveland played collegiate ball at Chico State (CA).
The Canaries open their fifth season of American Association play on May 13th when they host the defending American Association champion Lincoln Saltdogs.
